What this comparison shows

Two to four facilities are placed side by side, one column each. Every value is copied from the published CMS facility file, so the comparison adds no score, weighting, or opinion of its own.

  • CMS five-star rating
  • Dialysis stations
  • In-center hemodialysis
  • Home hemodialysis training
  • Peritoneal dialysis training
  • Shifts starting after 5 p.m.
  • Initial Medicare certification date

CMS quality measures printed for each facility

Under the facility fields the comparison prints the CMS quality measures, each with the unit and measurement period CMS publishes for it. Pediatric measures appear only when at least one selected facility has a published value, and a facility without a published value shows the CMS reason instead of a number.

How these published values are distributed across the country

Facility counts by chain owner

CMS records a chain owner for every certified dialysis facility. The table counts active facility records by the owner value each record carries.

The CMS file carries two chain columns: a “Chain Owned” flag that reads Yes or No, and a “Chain Organization” name. Where the flag reads No, CMS publishes the owner value Independent, and the table counts those records under that published value rather than treating them as missing data.

Every row counts active facility records in the CMS facility file KidneyPass retrieved on July 29, 2026, which holds 7,490 active records in total. Owner names are printed in the capitalisation KidneyPass uses site-wide. Where that differs from the CMS spelling, the CMS spelling is printed underneath; the record counts are untouched either way.

Other (95 records) and State Owned (19 records) are collective values CMS publishes in this column rather than the name of a company; those rows are marked in the table.

A chain-level count says nothing about any individual facility. Stations, home-training availability, evening shifts, and CMS star values are published facility by facility and differ inside every chain, so no row in this table can be read as a fact about a particular center.

Questions about comparing dialysis facilities

Each answer only reads back a value printed on this page or restates what KidneyPass already publishes about the comparison.

Which chain owner is named on the most facility records?

DaVita is named on 2,799 of the 7,490 active facility records in the CMS facility file KidneyPass retrieved on July 29, 2026, or 37.4% of them. That is a count of facility records, not of patients or treatments, and it says nothing about any individual center.

How many chain owners does the CMS dialysis facility file name?

6,748 of the 7,490 active facility records in the CMS facility file KidneyPass retrieved on July 29, 2026 are flagged as chain owned, and they carry 31 distinct owner values. Other (95 records) and State Owned (19 records) are collective CMS values rather than companies, so 29 of those values remain once they are set aside. The remaining 742 records are flagged as not chain owned, and CMS names them Independent.

How many dialysis centers are not chain owned?

742 of the 7,490 active facility records in the CMS facility file KidneyPass retrieved on July 29, 2026, or 9.9%, carry the CMS value Independent, which CMS publishes wherever its “Chain Owned” flag reads No. Being chain owned or independent is a record-level fact about ownership only: what a center offers is published facility by facility.

Which fields can be compared side by side?

7 facility fields are printed for every selected facility: CMS five-star rating, Dialysis stations, In-center hemodialysis, Home hemodialysis training, Peritoneal dialysis training, Shifts starting after 5 p.m., and Initial Medicare certification date. Under them the comparison prints 26 CMS quality measures, each with its published unit and measurement period.

Does KidneyPass rank the facilities it compares?

No. KidneyPass presents the published values neutrally and does not make a recommendation. The comparison repeats the published CMS values in a table and adds nothing to them.

What is the CMS five-star scale in this comparison?

The published CMS scale is 1 to 5 stars, and its measurement period is Jan 1, 2021–Dec 31, 2024. Where CMS publishes no star value for a facility, the comparison prints the CMS reason instead, never a substitute number.
